GM eliminates close to 1,000 positions in global restructuring initiative

General Motors (GM) is implementing workforce reductions affecting approximately 1,000 employees globally, with the majority of positions being eliminated in the United States.
The automotive giant has confirmed these staff reductions, indicating they represent a key component of their continuing initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and maximize performance in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
GM highlighted that these workforce adjustments support its strategic vision of maintaining industry leadership, especially as the company accelerates its transition toward electric vehicles and software development—areas that require substantial capital investment. In line with its financial objectives, GM aims to reduce EV-related losses by $2 billion to $4 billion by the end of next year.
This current wave of staff reductions continues GM's ongoing organizational restructuring efforts.
During August, the corporation eliminated over 1,000 positions within its software division as part of a larger reorganization initiative. The company also executed significant workforce reductions earlier in the year, including the September elimination of roughly 1,700 positions at its Kansas manufacturing facility. Throughout 2023, GM extended voluntary buyout packages to approximately 5,000 salaried employees as part of its continuing cost reduction and operational refocusing strategy.
